| Jackie and Bender Radio Station... March 15, 2002 | Bender : Seattle's own gold AND silver medallist, Apolo Ohno. Hey he's back in town. And you know it's your day again, right? Apolo: Heh heh, not today, I didn't know, I mean, it was yesterday. B: Yeah, apparently, the mayor is trying to one up the governor. A: Uh oh [laughs] B: So you get your own day in the city, as opposed to what, just the state? Jackie: The whole state was yesterday, it was your day. Do you ever get angry that before the Olympic games, they would have never given you your own day? And now they're fighting over you? A: (girly laugh) That's good. That's a good thing. J: It must be weird, though, for you though. Because obviously, speed skating is not a sport like basketball, or things that people follow everyday. A: right J: ...and overnight you're thrown in front of the spotlight. What's that like? A: Its.. like, quick? You know? I mean, definitely a lot of people didn't even know about short track until the games.. I'm... I'm, just real happy that everybody liked it, you know, and that there was a lot of people that definitely gave it attention. B: We're talking to Apolo Ohno, home town Olympian boy! J: Now how about your dad? Has his salon been getting a lot of extra clients, lately? A: Naw, he, he usually gets the same ones, you know. He's been getting the past same ones for the past 10, 15, 20 years, you know. J: I thought maybe suddenly, people would be coming in to get their hair done, JUST to get an autograph, or trying to work their way in. A: Yeah, some people they just come in to say hi or whatever. J: Now your dad raised you on his own. Right? A: Yeah J: Wow, he must have been so proud watching the Olympics. A: Oh yeah. He was. He really was. B: We have Apolo Ohno on the phone and what was it.. last night, you arrived a day early... A: I did B: Back here out of town, and I'm watching Q 13 and Q 13 is right there with a camera. It was priceless because, cuz very rarely is a celebrity in the spotlight, they're not politically correct but always put the postive spin on things and Apolo says what are you doing here? [all three laugh] A: I know I was tired you know? They snuck in there. I don't even know how they got there. J: I like the twist though. They go, "he didn't even have time to joke around with us" and it shows you going "what are you doing here?" J: Yeah I don't blame you. You were probably hoping you could sneak into town, get a good night's sleep, see your dad, and then be hounded. A: Yeah, you know. I was trying to sneak out. I told all my friends that I wasn't coming in til today. J: Aw. What have you been doing since the Olympics ended? Where have you been? I know that you were probably on Letterman and all that. But is that what you have been doing? Pretty much a press tour? A: Yeah pretty much, just a like big whirlwind of all kinds of tours and appearances. And stuff like that. I haven't got a chance to just sit down and relax. You know, a day here, a day there but that's about it. B: You know, you have a huge billboard on mercer. A: I do? B: Have you seen it? A: No I haven't seen that B: Yeah, you come off on five, as soon as you come off on five and you hit mercer, there's a HUGE billboard that says "Ohno, Oh YES" A: [Giggles] J: Its very nice. Yeah A: I gotta see that J: You SHOULD! You gotta get a picture of that. I mean, how often does a city give you your own billboard? A: I know J: That is cool. Now are you dating anybody? A: Uhhhh.. you know its... definitely I mean with short track and being at the games, it's real hard to keep it real steady, you know what I mean? J: So you sorta have a girlfriend but it's been real hard to see her lately? A: Yeah J: Gotcha. Is she pretty patient about it though? A: Yeah. [laughs] a li'l bit J: He's so keeping mum on this whole thing. Are you trying to keep your options open Apolo? A: Yeah! [really enthusiastically] J: [Laughs] See? B: He's like, I want to see what this gold medal gets me J: Well, yeah I think you probably get the attention of some girls during the Olympic, most likely A: Maybe, you know. I dunno J: Have you had any women hitting on you, like on the airplane or when you were out doing appearances? A: Nah... nah... J: No? A: [Laughs] No, no, not too bad. J: Not a single phone number slipped your way? [silence] A: No.. well... no.. mayb.. no... [Laughs] J: OH! You SO have gotten a couple phone numbers [Laughs] I tell yah... B: You haven't even remotely come close to seeing some Hollywood starlet try to off your gold medal for a night with her? A: [Laughs] NO! no I wouldn't do that J: REALLY? What about other Olympians? A: Who? J: Any other Olympians while you were in Utah? A: No..uh... it was pretty low key, it was pretty laid back when I was there B: Did you hook up with anybody after the closing ceremonies? You all looked a little loopy A: Aw, c'mon! No.. [laughs] J: He was probably so tired, geez B: He SO doesn't want to answer that J: I know! Listen to him! You are so guilty Apolo! [all three laugh]
