Epic Poetry

Epic poetry served as a vehicle for the transmission of cultural information in primary oral cultures. The format of epic poetry developed as an effective method of transmission because it could accommodate memory aids such as repetition, meter, somatic gestures, and an oral encyclopedia of stock phrases. These aids to memory were necessary because it is the human memory which can store and retrieve cultural information. This paper will address the use of these mnemonic devices in epic poetry.
