Andrew Walker Name: Andrew William Walker Age: 23 Birthday: June 9 1979 Hometown: Montreal, Quebec, Canada. (Andrew is from the English-speaking part of Montreal.) How You Know Him: Andrew stars as Molly's "shady" older brother Rick on the WB's awesome Friday-night comedy Maybe It's Me. Canadian TV fans will also recognize him from a string of roles on shows like Student Bodies, Radio Active and Back to Sherwood.
The Canadian Club: It seems like Canadian actors are all over American television these days, and Andrew says that he came down to Los Angeles with about six other young actors from Montreal, and three of them got shows. Andrew's Canadian actor pals in Hollywood include Undeclared star http://www.teenmag.com/starstuff/whosthatbabe/jaybaruch_1.shtml">Jay Baruchel and http://www.teenmag.com/starstuff/watchthisface/">Elisha Cuthbert from 24. He and Elisha are actually good friends, although they don't hang out as much as they'd like. "We're just so busy and her schedule's so different from mine," says Andrew. "So, we talk a lot on the phone and stuff, but we don't hang out too often." See, TV actors work hard! Oh, and a group of Andrew's close friends from high school are living in Los Angeles too and trying to score a record deal for their band, Bliss. So, between his career and all these California Canadians, Andrew barely has time to be homesick.
Mystery Man: On Maybe It's Me, Andrew plays the oldest kid in the Sage clan, Rick. "No one really knows what Rick does," says Andrew. "He's a pretty mysterious guy. He hangs out in his room a lot." It seems like whatever Rick is up to, it certainly isn't legal. Luckily, Rick's parents aren't so swift. "His parents are completely oblivious to everything that Rick does," says Andrew, laughing. "He'll give his dad Rolexes one after another, and he's just like, 'Oh Ricky, thanks a lot there. You must have paid a pretty penny for these.' You know Rick is stealing these Rolexes and selling them on the black market or something."
Pretty Boy: Another thing about Rick Sage, which I'm sure you've noticed, is that he's quite a hottie. But you wont see him using his bulging biceps for anything other than meeting girls. "Rick's thing is that his muscles are for show," says Andrew. "He always says his muscles are not working muscles. They're for show, purely for show. And he's all into his hair all the time. He's a pretty vain guy." Of course, it's really Andrew with the nice hair and the cute muscles, but luckily he doesn't have the same vain view of himself.
Back to the Beginning: Andrew's career began early, and he started acting professionally as a teenager. "I started off doing this show called Are you Afraid of the Dark," says Andrew. (Elisha and Jay also appeared on that show.) Next Andrew appeared on My Home Town, also with Jay, and then he landed the role of J.J. on Student Bodies. Then came two more shows, Back to Sherwood and Radio Active. "Then I met this guy Ryan, who I became really close with, and we decided to make the trip out to L.A." says Ryan. "It was a really good time for him, because his father had passed away from cancer about two months before that. He kind of just wanted to get out of Montreal and leave all the memories and stuff. So, he said, 'Yeah man, I'd love to go.'" The Move: Andrew bought a 1988 Volkswagen Fox for $1300 Canadian--about $700 American--and the two guys drove across country toward Hollywood, staying at friends' houses along the way. At one point, the car died in the mountains of Colorado. "I guess all the climbing and the altitude took a beating on the engine," explains Andrew. "We were going like 20 maybe 30 miles an hour up these hills, and trucks are flying past us at like 80 miles an hour." Andrew laughs thinking back on it. "And so our car broke down, we got it fixed that night and then took off to Vegas the next day." After a good time in Las Vegas, the guys headed on into L.A. The whole trip took the five days.
Goofing Off: When Andrew isn't working on Maybe It's Me--which he usually does about four or five days a week--he takes advantage of L.A.'s beautiful weather by taking a walk in the park or going to the beach. "On the weekends though, I play in this ball hockey league down at the beach," says Andrew. "I play flag football too." You didn't think he got those muscles from hanging around on the couch, did you?
Skates or Skis: As Andrew says, "In Montreal, you're pretty much born on skates." So, as a kid, Andrew played hockey like the rest of his friends, but he was also into skiing. "I was growing out of my equipment so fast," says Andrew. "So my dad made me choose. He said, 'It's way too expensive [to do both], so what do you want to do: ski or skate?' And I picked downhill skiing." Andrew still skis often, and, although he never raced as a skier, he did give lessons. (Why don't my instructors ever look like him?!) "I'm more into the extreme skiing kind type stuff," says Andrew. This daring dude likes to ski down giant glaciers or over cliffs.
Other Plans: Even though he's acted almost his whole life, Andrew's first love was football. He had aspirations of playing college football in America, and then maybe going pro, but... "During the show Student Bodies, I was probably the most serious I'd ever been in football," says Andrew. "My coach wasn't understanding with my acting and my football thing. So, I was balancing school, football and acting." Despite all that, Andrew got football scholarships to both Boston College and Southern Mississippi. One day, Andrew showed up late to a scrimmage from the set of a TV movie he was filming. His coach insisted that he start the game, even though he hadn't warmed up yet. Andrew explains, "He said, 'No Walker! Get in there. You're gonna stretch as you play.' So I went in there, and the first carry that I had the ball, I tore my ACL." After this devastating injury, Andrew lost both his scholarships and was out of football for good. "I tried to turn the negative into a positive," he says. "I started thinking, 'What do I have now that I can try to build on?'" The answer: acting. Dealing With It: Just because he's got a successful acting career now doesn't mean Andrew is happy he missed out on football. "It was difficult," he admits. "This is my first year that I'm filming and not playing football. It was difficult watching the Rose Bowl and watching these college games, but, you know, it's for the best." It's good that Andrew can look at things so positively. "My mom just loves it," he adds, laughing. "For years, she was like, 'Quit football this year.'".
