Community Managers - Web Sets

What is a web set?

A web set is a set of matching backgrounds, images, buttons and dividers for pages on the internet. It need not contain all the elements mentioned above, but in order to be characterized as a web set it needs to have at least one background and one image that match the background. A web set can be a set of a few pieces only, or it can have 20-30 different pieces.

What is linkware?

Linkware is a web set offered by someone for someone else to use with a link back to the creator. It can contain backgrounds, images, dividers and buttons etc. The Terms of Use for using linkware is different from site to site, which is why it's important to read these Terms of Use before downloading linkware. Linkware can consist of only a couple of pieces to 20-30, all depending on the preferences of the creator.

How to use a web set?

Usually a site that offers web sets for linkware has a page with the Terms of Use of their work. Be sure to read that carefully before downloading the web set and using it on your site. It is important that you download all pieces (or the zip file if that's an option) to your computer and then upload the pieces from there. That way you are not stealing bandwidth, nor will you lose the images if the creator decides to delete the set to gain back their storage.

How to use web sets from Community Managers?

Our web sets and mini sets are in list pages. Mini sets are web sets, but only with a few backgrounds and an image or two. All of our sets are supplied as ZIP files to limit and reduce the risk of bandwidth theft. You will require a zip utility such as Winzip. In order to use these sets you must read and agree with our terms of use.

Both the web sets and the mini sets are sorted so that the newest additions are at the top of the list. Click HERE to proceed to the web sets list, and HERE for the mini sets.

HTML/Background Codes

Beyond The Horizons is a site which offer various sets of HTML codes that you may use to put your web sets together for www sites and custom pages in the groups. That section has close to twenty different background codes that you may choose from. If you have never used HTML codes (also known as background codes) before, it is recommended that you start out with the codes that only has a few layers as they are easier to follow.

Looking for more linkware?

There are a lot of sites that offers linkware provided that you link back to their site. Community Managers recommends the following three sites:
- Smoking Rose Graphics
- Bel's Gifs & Things
- Angels Designs

Want to make your own web sets?

Beyond The Horizons offers tutorials for Paint Shop Pro 7 and 8 on how to make different parts of a web set, including backgrounds, buttons and main images. The background codes they offer can be used to put the parts of a web set together on pages in MSN Groups and for www sites. In addition they have a special help program where they offer the images and specifications to make web sets and you post your results to get constructive criticism back which is meant to help you improve. All web sets are commented on and you may participate regardless of what level you feel you're at. That section is called webworks and is for both beginners and more advanced.

We hope you have found this information useful. Any questions may be posted on the general message board.
