The Windows 98 defrag utility is better than its predecessors.
It records the way Windows accesses files when you run a program, then reorganizes those files to fit how Windows works. For example, it organizes files sequentially, in the order Windows reads them, and places your most frequently accessed programs on the fastest parts of your disk. The end result? A speed boost for all your programs, and a bigger boost for your favorites.
NOTE: System File Checker
Click the Update on all files it ask you to.
When it finds a Corrupted file, you will be asked for verification that these files have been changed. You well be prompted to repair the file or update the file that has been changed. In some cases a file had to be changed for the updated windows you just added. Note and write every file down you encounter when a corrupted file is found. If you become unsure about the file then ignore it and see if you can find out more on the file by using a messageboard to help you find the answer if you have to update it or fix it from disk. Also note any new changes on how your PC is now running.
Some cab file stored in your pc may be Outdated and could cause you a lot of problems that could have been avoided. Don't worry. By clicking Ignore on these files doesn't mean that the files will go away. The next time you run SFC the same ignored files will pop up again asking you to fix them. Remember to write all these Corrupted files down on paper. Let your PC run for a Week or even a Month if you wish to be on the safe side with these files being Ignored and see if there will be any Warning popping up on these files.
If you Do have any warning popping up compare it to the list you have written down on your paper and if it is on the list. If it is then go back to safemode and run SFC again only fixing the error file that came up, ignoring the rest again. If you have no warnings and your Pc is running fine and your not having any problems then the next time you run SFC and the same files pop's up again as corrupted then it will be safe to click on Update the Corrupted files and it won't ask you to fix it again.

Instruction for WindowsMe
Windows Me can not run SFC (system file checker)
Instead you have to use the rollback feature or system Restore..
How to use Systems Restore in WinsMe..
1. Make sure to close all running programs
2. From the start menu on the tool bar -
3. Select programs
4. Select accessories
5. Select system tools
6. Select system restore
In system restore,
select "restore my computer to an earlier time", click next
Choose a restore point - select a date on the calendar, click next. It takes a few minutes to restore, follow the prompts and the computer will automatically restart and return to system restore to give you status of the restore and you are done. Also create a restore point before you install software just in case things go wrong. That way you can go back and restore back to your manual restore point. Also keep a log of problems and when the system is running good. Windows creates your system checkpoints automatically and it makes it easy to go back to a time when things were "normal".
