DIET
· It is not possuble to treat Haemochromatosis with a low iron diet, but there are some general considerations to be made.
· The consumption of alcohol is discouraged. As weel as causing liver disease alcoholis an inhancer of iron uptake.
· A reduction in offal ( brains, liver stc.) and red meat is desirable, and in general a healthy sound nutritional diet is recommended.
· Avoid foods coneaining vitimins fortified with iron. Do not consume vitimin supplements with vit.c ( which is an enhancer of iron asdorbtion) or irin sulplements such as tonic and pills. Do no unnecessarily restrict the intake of any foods or groups of foods from your diet as this may lead to deficiencies in some nutrients. This is particularly important as you will lose some nutrients other than iron with repeat venesection and these must be replaced with the foods you eat.
· THE INHIBITORS
a.phosphates ( iron inhibitor)
Cheese, other milk products. lean meats
b.Carbonates (iron inhibitor)
Ginger ale, root beer and sodas. Beer and wine also contain carbonates but since alcohol is a famous enhancer of iron absorption and since it injures the liver, we'll leave it off the list.
c.Tannates ( iron inhibitor )
Black tea, with or without caffiene.
Least iron absorption was with wholemeal flour, tea and high fibre cereals.
d. Oxalates( iron inhibitor)
Fruits; currants, figs, plums, raspberries, rhubarb
Vegetables;green and wax beansendives, okra, sweet potato, tomato
Nuts: almonds
Others ; chocolate, cocoa and tea
e. Crab, lobster, turkey, chicken prawns (shrimps)
Wheat Germ,Brazil nuts,garbanzo beans
Dried non-fat milk
THE ENHANCERS
Enhancers increase the amount of iron absorbed from your food.
Eating meat and vegetables together will allow more iron to be absorbed. Vit C and alcohol also aids the uptake of iron in the diet.
· High Vit.c( iron enhancer)
· Guava, collards, cabbage, green pepper, water chestnuts and asparagus.
· Broccoli, cauliflower, turnip greens, brussels sprouts
· Grapefruit,paw paw ,oranges, strawberries
Special foods
Spinach and cashews are high in iron but contain an inhibitor, so the iron is not absorbed
