INCENSE

~ RITUAL USES ~
Ancient Egyptians burned Frankincense at sunrise to honor Ra.

A very powerful aid to meditation.
Use to purify ritual spaces and invoke a spiritual frame of mind.

LAMMAS
Lammas is August 1.
Now the Corn King dies as his body is harvested
from the fields so that I may be fed,
so that I may live, so that I may go into the winter months
of darkness rich with his blood and love in my veins.

The Dark King, Shepherd of souls,
becomes stronger now.

With Winter I will go inward,
to the inner depths of my own soul.

And HE will embrace me with His love in the coming
trials and celebrations of the Wintertime.

Some of my crops are harvested and I give thanks.

Some of my crops are not yet ready and I must
insure their harvest.

Lammas originates from the Celtic festival of Lunasadh,
a word that translates into "The games (or gathering) of Lugh."
Lugh was a popular god associated
with the harvest, as well as the Sun.
He was known as Lud in England,
Llew in Wales, Lugus in Gaul and Lugh in Ireland.
Many locations around the world were named after him.
Lyons in France was called Lugdunum,
Carlisle in Great Britain was Caer Lugubalion, and London
was named Lud.

It has been recently discovered that the prototype festival
of Lammas is even older in origin, and it started as an annual
time to assemble to mourn the death of summer, or the death
of the Corn God.

There was a tradition of games being held during this time,
in honor of the waning god.

In fact, the original Olympic games were funeral games hel
every fourth year at Olympia in Elis around the end of July.

Whether you call the festival Lammas or Lunasadh, it marks
the beginning of the end of the summer season of growth,
a time when the heat of the "Dog Days" of summer
(beginning July 27) ripens and dries the grain in the fields.

Although the weather is typically hot and sultry, it is
considered by many cultures as the start of the autumn season,
as growth has ended and the harvesting begins.

In many places around the world it is still considered
unlucky to pick any fruit, reap any grain or dig up
any vegetables prior to Lammas.

In this age where crops can be imported all year round,
we tend to forget how important this time was to our ancestors
- the failure of the harvest meant starvation and death.
This is still true even today in many parts of the world.
As we thank the gods for bountifulness of our harvest
we should remember those who are less fortunate,
who live in the poorer parts of our towns and cities and
in our world, and offer up a big prayer for them.
If possible some practical help in the form of a charitable
donation of food or clothing will help those
less fortunate to enjoy the harvest.

From the book, The Fragrant Heavens
by Valerie Ann Worwood

Frankincense is not just for Christmas
I know we associate Frankincense and Myrrh
with the holidays but don't forget that Frankincense
is a valuable essential oil for facial care.
It helps to slow down the formation
of wrinkles and may evens often the ones that are there.
It helps to restore some tone to slack
looking facial skin making it useful for older skin.
