MEDICINAL USES
Goldenseal contains the alkaloid berberine, which has proven
antibiotic, antibacterial and antifungal properties.
Native Americans used it to treat a number of ailments;
whooping cough, liver problems, and eye sores.
Berberine activates white blood cells called macrophages,
which destroy viruses, bacteria, fungi, tumor cells.
In a process known as phagocytosis.
This alkaloid is cosidered an immuno-stimulant, while another alkaloid,
hydrastine, is also concidered a potential gastric anti-inflammatory.
Berberine does not appear to penetrate intestinal walls and get
into the blood stream; its actions are local to the gut.
Used by Indians to color clothing.
Plant sends up a simple hairy stem 8-20" tall with 3-5 lobed,
dark green leaves that in summer may become 4-10" broad.
May trough June flower is solitary, small,
white or rose colored, appearing in early spring.
CRITTERS
Give a tincture of equal drops
of echinacea and goldenseal.
If the illness persists after two weeks,
try a combination
of different herbal antibiotics
after careful diagnosis by your vet.
If the animal recovers quickly,
continue giving the herbs
for a few days after, to aid in healing completely.
I generally give a capsule of garlic oil
in the food once per week.
It helps keep the biting insect critters away,
and helps keep
the immune system healthy.
This wild plant is scarce today
andd is cultivated for medicinal puposes.
The only thing I do is buy it
at the vitamin store,
with Echinacea (Cone Flower)
and always have those
on hand
in the winter, to avoid catching colds.
