HOW TO RELAX
by Karyn Greenstreet
In our hectic world, taking time to relax
is crucial to your physical and emotional well-being.
Sometimes we need to relax our bodies, especially after
physical exertion, or when we feel our muscles are tense.
At other times, we need to relax our minds, letting go of stressful
thoughts and other demands on our intellect and emotions.
But do you really know the best way to relax?
Here are a few great relaxation ideas to try:
I'm especially fond of the nap.
Experts tell us that naps longer than 45 minutes will put you too deeply
to sleep, making you feel groggy instead of refreshed when you awaken.
If you can't sleep during your nap time,
it's okay to simply relax quietly and close your eyes.
Walking in nature is a great way of relaxing.
I'm not talking about a "power walk" here,
but instead more of an "amble through the park."
Pay attention to all the sights and sounds, and take time
to stop, sit, and breathe in the fresh air.
Writing in a journal can be very relaxing, a chance to get
all those bothersome thoughts out of your head and onto paper.
There's something about committing your thoughts and emotions
to paper - almost as if, once they're written down, you don't have
to store them inside your mind and heart anymore.
Doing artwork, crafting, or listening
I find that re-focusing my mind on something for an hour can
take me away from my everyday world and relax me completely.
Try some deep breathing exercises.
Because these can be done anytime, anywhere,
they're especially clever relaxation techniques

Finally, a soothing aromatherapy or bubble bath can be just the thing.
Consider using herbs such as lavender
which are known for their soothing properties.
Follow-up with moisturizing lotion and a big, cozy bathrobe.
Consider creating a special time each week as your "Relaxation Time."
Tell your family and friends that you are not available during Relaxation Time.
Keep your boundaries clear about needing time to yourself.
Feeling guilty about taking a little time to relax?
Don't be!
One hour to yourself will revitalize you,
give you energy and a clear mind.
When you are both physically and emotionally exhausted,
you have less energy to give to family and friends.
By recharging your batteries, you'll have more to give to others.
So what are you going to do this week to relax?
