The Hittites

Hittite history divides into two main periods, with a long coda. First comes the Old Kingdom (1700-1420). A central kingship with its capital at Boghazkoy (Hattusas, to the Hittites) was established. The Hittites moved out of their central area to exert control over other areas of Asia Minor and northern Syria. Most important event is the raid of Mursilis in 1595, which ended the Amorite dynasty in Babylon. There was some uncertainty as to order of succession (no fixed hierarchy in the royal house), and the Old Kingdom ended in dynastic chaos from 1500 on. Order was restored ca. 1420, and a steady succession established. It is not clear how this dynasty relates to what precedes. Eventually, they re-established themselves in the period immediately after the reign of Akhenaten, when Egypt, which had been dominant here, was occupied with restoring order at home. Indeed, Tutankamun's widow asked him to send a son to be her bride. Eventually Egypt got itself together and Ramesses II tried to reassert influence in Syria. Battle of Karkemesh (1275) was claimed as victory by Ramesses, but seems to have been Hittite victory that couldn't be exploited. Hittites remained as major power until all of a sudden ca. 1200 they up and vanished. The archives at Hattusas simply stop with no hint of trouble and archaeology shows that a huge fire destroyed the city.
