Pan was the god of herds, flocks, fertility, forests, and wildlife. He is known to be a formidable musician, and even challenged the god Apollo to a contest. Pan's instrument of choice was known as the Syrinx. This was a flute that consisted of seven descending sized reeds placed size by side.
