Who was Lúthien Tinúviel?
Luthien was an elven princess who lived in the First Age of Middle Earth. She lived in the realm of Doriath, in Beleriand. Lúthien was the daughter of a great king of elves, Thingol Greycloak, and of Queen Melian, a maia spirit.
Lúthien was the fairest of all the creatures living in Middle Earth, for she was known for her long dark hair and fair skin. For it was not common for an elf to have dark features. Yet Lúthien brought grace and beauty along with her everywhere she went.
Lúthien's well-known beauty had not been seen on the earth, until the birth of Arwen Undómiel, daughter of Elrond Halfelven, whose family line can be traced back to that of Beren and Lúthien. It is said it was in Arwen that Lúthien had come back to Middle Earth, again. Many have mistakened Arwen for Lúthien, for their looks are very similar.
Lúthien was also the first elf to die as a mortal. Lúthien fell in love with a man named Beren, and from that moment on, Lúthien's life was doomed forever.
King Thingol was furious when he found out his daughter gave her heart to a mortal man. It was unheard of for an elf to marry out of their own kin, espeicially a princess with such a high title.
Lúthien decided then she would forsake her elven immortality for a life with her beloved, and may she and Beren meet up again in an afterlife.
The story of Beren and Lúthien is a haunting love story, similar to that of Arwen and Aragorn's. For both elven princess' gave up everything to do what their hearts desired...to live a mortal life, and to die a mortal.
