Post Office Directory 1858 Westmoreland Martindale is a township and chapelry in the parish of Barton, 11½ miles south-south-west of Penrith and 11 north-east from Ambleside, and comprises the glens of Boredale, 11½ miles south-south-west of Penrith; Fewsdale, a fertile district, 5 miles south-south-west of Pooley Bridge, with the hamlets of Howtown, pleasantly situate at the south-west angle of the lower reach of Ullswater and Sandwick, near the head of Boredale, 1½ miles south-west of the chapel. It is situated on the western side of Ullswater, and is surrounded on the east by a chain of hills, which afford herbage to large quantities of sheep. The chapel is a neat ediface, standing in the vale of Howgrane, 5b miles south-west of Pooley Bridge. It is supposed to have been built about the year 1633, and the interior underwent a complete repair in 1833. The living is a perpetual curacy, worth £75 yearly, with the residence, in the patronage of the trustees of the late John de Whelpdale, Esq., of Penrith; the Rev. Thomas Henry Wilkinson is the incumbent. Here is an endowed National school for boys and girls. The population, in 1851, was 208; and the acreage is 8,060. | Wilkinson Rev.
