November 1897

HOWTOWN - A cormorant, or sea raven, was shot on Ullswater by Mr. C. R. Farrer, Howtown. Standing 3ft 3in high and measuring 4ft 6in from tip to tip of wings, it was placed in the hands of Mr. Leonard Hope, taxidermist, for treatment.

December 1898

MARTINDALE - The parish of Martindale was in a parlous condition respecting education, for it had been without a school of any kind for thirteen months, and the children were being sadly neglected in the matter of mental culture. The education department tardily issued a notice for a meeting of ratepayers to consider the formation of a school board. The day was stormy and there were very few present, a strange spirit of indifference existing. Five voted for a school board and five against, the chairman (Mr. Richard Mounsey) giving his casting vote in favour.

June 1901

MARTINDALE - An outbreak of anthrax occurred on the farm of Mrs. Armstrong, Bridge End, Martindale. A veterinary surgeon found that three young Shorthorns had died. He called Inspector Cheeseman, Shap, who found anthrax bacilli to exist very distinctly in the cattle, though there was no trace of it in the artificial feeds which had been used. Every precaution was taken against any spread of the disease.

March 1906

SWARTHBECK COTTAGE - At the advanced age of 87 years, Mr. Douglas Hebson, died at his residence, Swarthbeck Cottage, Ullswater. When young, he learnt the business of ship designing in Liverpool and designed some of the largest vessels on the Mersey, as well as the Ullswater steamers, the Lady of the Lake and the Raven. After returning to his native district, he subscribed liberally to many charities and was largely responsible for the building of a new church on Martindale Hause, which replaced the ancient chapel in the dale.

December 1906

MARTINDALE - Miss Atkinson resigned from the headship of Martindale School, having taken on new duties at Soulby Council School, near Kirkby Stephen.

December 1907

MARDALE - The shepherds’ meet was held at the Dunn Bull, Mardale. The committee appointed were Messrs. H. Douthwaite; N. Gregg, Kentmere; J. Nicholson, Long Sleddale; J. Bland, High Howe; J. Wilkinson, Martindale; S. Barnett, Swindale; J. Wilson, Hartsop; T. Edmondson, Mardale and J. Leek, Kentmere; with Mr. Wilson as temporary secretary.
