Saving Private Ryan

Starring Tom Hanks.

This has to be considered the most important war movie ever made because the battle was certainly one of the greatest in human history. June 6, 1944 was the date of the greatest invasion in history--perhaps only excepting when Xerxes invaded Greece with his Persian hordes. Tom Hanks won the Oscar for his role as Captain Miller. Everyone who saw this movie should get something like an "associate" Combat Infantry Badge--it's that realistic.

Shane

Starring Alan Ladd, Van Heflin, Jack Palance.

One of the best westerns ever made. Certainly among the top ten westerns. Beautiful cinematography, perfect casting, and skilled acting make this classic story of a gunfighter trying to escape his past fresh and new. The sound mixing of Shane's gunfire when he was showing Brandon DeWilde some marksmanship makes you jump. Jack Palance was the perfect villian--the very personification of evil. Jean Arthur did her best work as Heflin's homesteader wife. I see this movie at least once a year.

Silverado

Starring Kevin Cline, Kevin Costner, Danny Glover.

Made in 1985, this is another classic western. Kevin Costner stole the show with his marvelous-looking two-gun rig. Some of the best gunplay ever filmed especially the ending scenes where everyone is shooting. Realistic characters that you would probably have met in the 1880's. A bank robber turned crooked sheriff, a former outlaw gone straight, a powerful and ruthless land baron-- all well done and believable.

The Rough Riders

Starring Tom Berenger, Sam Shepard.

Maybe because TR was my favorite president, or maybe because of the great pains the moviemakers went to in order to be authentic, this rates as one of my all-time favorites. The heroic Rough Riders' tale has finally been told well in the movies. Made in 1997 by Turner.

The Wackiest Ship in the Army

Starring Jack Lemmon, Ricky Nelson.
Jack Lemmon plays a Navy Lieutenant who is given command of a decrepit sailing vessel and a green crew.  His job is to make blue water sailors out of them in a short period of time for a secret mission.

Look for the actor (Alvey Moore) who used to play Hank Kimble on the old Green Acres TV series!

Twelve Oclock High

Starring Gregory Peck.
Gregory Peck plays Brigadier General Frank Savage, who assumes command of a WW-II bomber group that is having significant moral, personnel &equipment problems.

This movie shows different leadership techniques and how they may be applied.  It was used for many years in the Navy's NAVLEAD and LMET courses.

You're in the Navy Now

Starring Gary Cooper, Eddie Albert, Jack Webb, Charles Bronson.
Gary Cooper, Eddie Albert, & Jack Webb are all Navy Reserve officers who have never served aboard ship before.  They are tasked with making a new propulsion system work on a small patrol craft.

Look for a very young Charles Bronson as one of the enlisted sailors.
