In 1967 A line mechanic at Stephens Pontiac In Bristol Ct Had been racing His 41 willis coupe and doing quite well.
He also noticed racing was not an inexpensive sport.
Bill eckstrom Went up to the bosses office and said" How about giving me one of those new RAM AIR cars to race.
To his surprise The big boss said I'll see what we can get our hands on.
For a while he didn't here much, Then the boss called and said Bill you new race car is here go check it out.
It was a brand new light wieght RAII 4 spd with 4.33 gears. It also had a steel front bumper. Was this a GTO or a lemans. It was Yellow with black interior. It was a true GTO. Bill said when do we race it. They told him when it gets back from paint and lettering you can pull the engine so we can get it balanced and blue printed.
The finished product looked like this:(under contruction)
Ths car was raced regionally by bill and his crew. The car did quite well but the specifics as with all the cars have been lost to time.
The next year Bill had asked for a new car something a little lighter maybe a firebird this time.
He was told to contact Tom Nell at engineering and tell them what he wanted.
The car they got was a Golden rod yellow(the color of stephens pontiacs sign) 69 RAIV firebird 4 spd with 3.90 gears. The car was radio, sound deadener, and seamseal delete.
It also went to woodys famous paint shop for the lace paintjob of a lifetime.
and got lettered.
It looked like this :
