PAUL AND TYLER
My name is Paul, Originally from London but now live in Kent. I have 1 dog (Tyler) and his age is 17 Months.
I have been into the breed for several years, always loved the breed for as long as I can remember and if I didn't own one, was always around them. As I understand it, my granddad was a night watchman and used to keep several to keep down vermin and also to deter thieves.
The characteristics of my dogs personality, i would say extremely Loving, funny, loyal, strong, noble. ( and that Funny mincey walk of course and the cute "Girlie Sitting position :0)). My kids chose the name.
Tyler was very "Boisterous" as a young dog/pup and needed close attention re mouthing/rough play and general destructive behaviour (Kids clothes, jumping up, ankle nipping, rough play in general) He saw himself (I think) as number 2 in our house (Above my wife and kids), once he got the message he has been fantastic (But will still sneak away with the odd shoe to chew when your not looking!).
I had a period of about 3 weeks where I had to constantly correct his behaviour and it was quite tiring, but absolutely necessary or he wouldn't have turned out how he is today. Staff's can be very wilful and in their own way stubborn (part of the character) and at the same time willing to please.
In the toilet department I could not have wished for more. We got him at 6 weeks and within a couple of weeks he was going where we wanted him to and it was only a short progression to the garden. He never chewed any furniture to speak of, which so I hear is unusual, just clothes (and my wife and kids!)
He still pulls a bit when we are out (Me a bit, my wife a lot), but once the initial excitement fades he is fine. He loves people very very much but he is learning he cannot jump up at everyone he sees and is making great progress now, he is quite clever and seems to sense "What's right and wrong". He is fantastic with my kids now and puts up with no end of noise/jumping around etc and joins in when he can!
He still likes a bit of "Rough play", but have to be careful to control it and even in his "Most Spirited moments" I can put my hand right into his mouth without fear of him hurting/clamping down to tightly. Very good around other dogs, but occasionally takes a dislike to one or two or will sometimes react to threats initiated by other dogs.
I like to socialise him whenever possible, unless for some reason Jack Russell's are involved!, he doesn't mind them but they don't seem to like him in the main (or any other dogs)..don't mean to be "Breedist" but its funny how often they "Flare up". Tyler has a couple he plays with and one he taunts and when the JRT tries to bite him, Tyler runs off and makes him chase him, then comes back again and again and treats it as a game. (The JRT seems to enjoy it now too!)
I usually feed him "Pedigree Chum" etc and biscuits, supplemented by whatever else we have, Chicken/Rice etc. We have public land near us where he can run most of the time or walk on lead locally round town. Tyler hasn't won any awards and I am not out to stud him. I bought him from local breeder and he is Not KC registered, as his Dam was not KC Registered (Grandsire and Grand Dam were).
Sire was KC registered. (Checked pedigree and it is accurate.). Did not buy him to show, but as a pet for me/kids.
I would like to see pictures of "The old champion dogs" and more breed history stuff on the site . I think the site is very good with lots of categories.
Tyler, A more true, loyal and loving "Little pal" I could not ever wish to come across. he follows me everywhere, curls up on my feet etc.
He has the sort of character and personality, which I believe only this breed can produce.
In my opinion, once you have owned a Staff there can never be any other breed
