Jim Karnes was a Ranger Legend. Known affectionately as "POPS", he was the oldest man ever to go through U.S. Army Ranger School. He had just completed the school while I was in Airborne training at Ft. Benning, Georgia. I thought, "If that old guy can make it, I can". 20 years later, we were still friends, and fellow warriors. He will be missed, but he has finished his course, and made it home! Sincerely,

Ranger Jim Karns received his final promotion.
He was the oldest man ever to go through U.S. Ranger training.
He truly had a warrior's heart. I remember being at a karate clinic where Mr. Karns was leading the warm-up's. I thought, I am half his age, but shortly thereafter decided I was also only in half as good shape as he drilled us into the ground.
He was a Husband, Martial artist & instructor for Karate for Christ International, he was a pastor. He was a man who loved his family, his art but above all, loved his God. Mr. Karns has fought a good fight, finished the course, and kept the faith. Yesterday Ranger Jim Karns laid down his battered shield, hung up his sword, and was ushered in to the presence of the God of Glory. Today, a host of Angel Rejoices as Ranger Jim Karns heard the words of his Savior... "Well Done My Good and Faithful Servant".
One final thought. Who is going to fill his shoes?

It is with the greatest regret that I must announce the death of James Karnes. Jim was a 5th dan in Shinsei and the oldest man to ever go through Ranger training. He was a friend, student, and great man. We were going to work out with Jim this weekend. He went to the hospital on Sat. His wife said one of the thing he was worried most about was getting on his feet in time for the camp this week.

James Martin Karnes, 68, beloved husband, father and friend, went home Nov. 9, 2008. He was a native of West Virginia, a retired Methodist minister, retired Army veteran, student and teacher of the martial arts for more than 52 years. Mr. Karnes is survived by his devoted wife, Saundra Beth Karnes; three daughters, Tammy Carrier, Teresa Bartos and Tonya Garrett; two sons, James Phillip Karnes and Benny Lee Karnes; sister, Elaine Culpepper; five grandchildren, Mark, Jordan, Shannon, Ligia and Sidney; and a great-grandson, Devon. The burial service will be in Albert G. Horton Jr. Memorial Veterans Cemetery, Suffolk, Friday at 2 p.m. A memorial service will be held at 11 a.m. Saturday in Jolliff United Methodist Church. The family would like all memorial gifts to be given to Jolliff United Methodist to go towards the building fund. Loving Funeral Home, Churchland, is handling the arrangements.
