Christian-Ha Shito-Ryu A Difference in Name, Translation, and Meaning From That of Tradition
Traditional SHITO-RYU Translation: The founder of Shito-Ryu "Kenwa Mabuni" originally named his style "HANKO-RYU" meaning "Half-Hard Style", but, later changed it to reflect the deep respect he felt towards his two great masters, ITOSU and HIGAONNA. The written Kanji for Traditional Shito-Ryu: ?? ? Using the alternative reading of the Kanji for "ITO" from master ITOSUs’ name, (read as ? "SHI" ), and "HIGA" from master HIGAONNAs’ name, (read as ? "TO", Kenwa Mabuni created the name "SHITO" for his style of Karate-do. Christian-Ha SHITO-RYU Translation: The written Kanji for "Christian-ha Shito-Ryu": ??????-? ??-? Unlike Mabuni-Sensei, "Lewis-Sensei" as a Christian turned to scripture (the Bible), and using the Japanese learning concept of ShuHaRi, which is, Learn from Tradition; Break from Tradition; Transcend Tradition, sought to give name to a new faction of Shito-Ryu, that would not only represent Christianity, but embody the Christian faith.
Using the reading of Katakana and Kanji for "CHRISTIAN" (reading as ?????? "KIRISUTO KYOTO"), using the suffix -ha, for "TEACHING OF; SCHOOL OF" (reading as ? "HA").
In using the concept of ? "HA" (break from tradition) found in "ShuHaRi," Lewis-Sensei thought of the disciples in the Bible, and used the Kanji for "APOSTLE; DISCIPLE" and "METHOD OF; WAY OF" (reading as ?? "SHITO" ? "RYU"), Lewis-Sensei gave name to a new faction that embodied his belief in God, and the Christian faith.
Thus, the complete translation and interpretation is: "CHRISTIAN-HA" ?????? -? Christian School of "SHITO-RYU" ?? -? Apostles Method of "KARATE-DO" ?? -? Empty Hand Way
It's very important to note, the translation of Christian-ha "Shito" ryu is different from that of Mabuni-Sensei.
SHU HA RI: ? Shu: Learn from tradition. Biblical: we learn from the old ways; (Genesis - Malachi) ? Ha: Break from tradition. Biblical: we enter the New Beginning; (Matthew - John) ? Ri: Transcend tradition. Biblical: To embody the faith we profess; (Acts - Revelation)
Special Note: On 14 Sep 04, the Style of "Kirisuto Kyoto-ha ShuHaRi Shito-Ryu" was "Officially Recognized" by Karate for Christ International, as a legitimate Christian Ryu "Christian Karate-do Style" and Christian Ministry.
