~*Gardnerian Altar, Tools & Consecration Rituals*~

Consecration of Altar

You will need to properly set up your altar.  Any comfortable height table will do, that is large enough to carry the following items:

Working Pentacle (in center)
(From left to right and around the altar clockwise, you'll find)
Left Altar Candle (usually taper)
Statue or figure of Horned God
Statue or figure of Goddess
Right Altar Candle (usually taper)
Elemental candle (usually smaller, votive sized)
Thurible
Water Bowl
Salt Bowl
Book of Shadows area, area for Athame & Wand

Burn bay leaves in a censer/thurible, think good thoughts, imagine good power rising in the room via the smoke.  Invoke the God & Goddess in your mind, making it personal.  Make this space your sacred work area.

Consecration of the Working Tools

There are eight working tools in Gardnerian Witchcraft: the Athame, the Sword, the Cup/Chalice, the Pentacle, the Cords, the Censer/Thurible, the Scourge, and the White-hilted Knife.  The Athame and the Sword have there own consecration;  the others are consecrated as noted below:

Place the tool on the Pentacle and place your hands over it.  Say:

"Aradia and Cernunnos, deign to bless this and consecrate this White-hilted Knife (or whatever it is) that it may obtain the necessary virtue through you for all of love and beauty."

Sprinkle the tool with a salt water mixture.  Pass it through the incense clockwise three times.  Return it to the Pentacle and say:

"Aradia and Cernunnos, bless this instrument prepared in your honor."

In the case of the Scourge or the cords, add:

"...that it may serve for a good use and end and for your glory."

In the case of the Pentacle, just lay the Pentacle down on the altar - and consecrete it, as you would any other working tool.

A Special Consecration for the Chalice

When the moon is waxing, take some saltwater in a bowl, and steep the following herbs into it, powdered:

Vervain (verbena)
Mint
Basil
Rosemary
Hyssop
Lavendar
Sage
Valerian
Fennel

Light incense, consecrate and charge fire & herbal water.  Sprinkle cup with herbal water, pass through the incense smoke saying:

"By water and fire I conjure thee
That there remain
Within thy frame
No adverse thought nor enmity
Hear my will!! Attend to me!!
As my word,
So Mote It Be!!"

When painting the runes on the cup, chant the following:

"Blessed Be, thou cup of water!"

Consecration of the Athame and the Sword
Lay the Athame/Sword over the Pentacle, preferably touching another's consecrated Athame/Sword.  Sprinkle with salt and water mixture.  Then pick up the Athame/Sword and pass it through the smoke of the incense three times clockwise and replace it on the Pentacle. Say:

"I conjure thee, O Athame/Sword, by these names:  Abraback, Abrack, Abracadabra, that thou servest me for a strength and defense in all magickal operations against all mine enemies, visible and invisible.  I conjure thee anew by the Holy name Aradia and the Holy name Cernunnos:  I conjure thee, O Athame/Sword, that thou servest me for protection in the adversities; so aid me now."

The Consecrator passes the Athame/Sword holder (sheath/scabbard) through the incense three times, clockwise, sprinkling with the saltwater mixture and then, replaces it, saying:

"I conjure thee, O Athame/Sword of Steel, by the Great Gods and Gentle Goddesses, by the virtue of the heavens, of the stars and the spirits who  preside over them, that thou mayest receive such virtue that I may obtain the end that I desire in all things wherein I shall use thee, by the power of Arcadia and Cernunnos."

The Consecration of the Athame particularily....

Should be a black-hilted knife with a double edge.  You should blunt the point and it should not be terribly sharp, as skyclad circles can make for tight quarters.  Inscribe the following onto the hilt of the Athame, either painted in white or etched into the blade:
Please note, the Athame is NEVER used for cutting.  This is what the White-hilted knife is used for.

Consecration for Jewelery

Lay the object on the Pentacle, place your hands over it and say:

"I consecrate thee in the element of Earth."

Sprinkle the object with the salt water mixture, replace on Pentacle, place hands over it and say:

"I consecrate thee in the element of Water."

Pass it three times clockwise through the smoke of the incense.  Replace on the pentacle, place hands over it and say:

"I consecrate thee in the element of Air."

Pass it three times clockwise around the candle flame.  Replace on the Pentacle, place hands over it and say:

"I consecrate thee in the element of Fire, in the names of Cernunnos and Aradia."

Consecration of Amulet of Protection

This ritual creates a potent amulet to be worn or carried on one's person for protection.  You can also substitute a robe, bracelet, ect.. instead of a traditional amulet (pendant).  Be creative, as the consecrated item should be of personal signifigance to you.

Pass the amulet through the incense smoke three times clockwise, and sprinkle with the salt water mixture.  Place on altar Pentacle and recite the following:

"Krishna! I ask that it be done! Let your protection and that of Cerunnos and Aradia keep me safe from harm."

"The evil eye and all malignant forces!"

"Let thy power be my constant armour when I wear this Amulet!"

"The stars, the Earth, the Moon, the Sun....and I are One!"

"Our will be done!"

"Good Spirits, let thy power be given.  This Amulet, by Earth and Heaven."

If you are substituting and not consecrating an amulet, but a robe, for example, substitute the word "robe" for amulet, as underlined.
