Magickal Crafts
Every act we do is a magickal act. So every craft we practice is a magickal one. Whether you work with metal, wood, stone, or fabric you are creating something new and wondrous. For the time that your hands work on the project Divine energy flows through them. Your love and energy fill the item giving it a unique identity. Blankets can be made for healing someone or blessing a new beginning such as a baby or newly weds, poppets are made to take away sickness or fear, alters are made of wood or stone, I’m sure you can think of several others. We who use magick can bless and empower these items to be and give so much more. So that even when we cannot be there our love and energy is.
Once a year on Imbolc, I bless my crafting tools, sewing machine, crochet hooks, knitting needles, tatting equipment, scroll frames and all the rest. I bring them all to Brighid who was among many things the Goddess of hearth and home. Within ritual space I ask Her to bless my tools so that the gifts I give may help others even when I cannot. Though I do this at Imbolc it can be done any time there is a need. I’ve even been known to do drag everything back into circle for a second dose of blessing before a big project.
Any big magickal project I start is cleansed and blessed through and through. I spend time in meditation thinking of how I want to go about the project. Once I’ve decided what and how then I go shopping, saying a little prayer to find the best material(s) for my project. This is really an important step, the one time I didn’t say prayer, I ended up with things I wasn’t happy with and that didn’t serve my needs. Though at the time I was sure this was what I wanted. Once you get it home its time for a bit of ritual! It’s a good idea to dedicate all materials; this starts imbuing them with energy from the beginning and lets the universe know their purpose. During the ritual I call the Quarters and the Lord and Lady, depending on what you are doing you may want to call a specific God or Goddess. (i.e.- I want to make a ritual robe for Samhain I may call on Hecate to help me imbue the robe with energy of the crone, of death and rebirth) You then proceed as though you were consecrating your ritual tools. Once the ritual is done you can get started making your item. Now I usually do soft crafts, so I either need to wash material or floss so the colors don’t run or the fabric doesn’t shrink. Make sure you follow the mundane steps too. When those things are finished I start the project, I will usually work in a circle and chant. I have chanted simple things; Maiden, mother, crone. When I made my kids quilts it was; Earth, Air, Fire, Water, Lady and Lord I ask you to keep my children safe and warm thru the long night. It really didn’t flow or rhyme but it filled them with energy and kept me focused on my love for them. What you chant isn’t really as important as the intent, if it doesn’t keep you focused or the energy isn’t moving change it. You can even use many different chants during the course of your project.
Hooray, your project is done. One more round of ritual and some lucky person will receive a very special gift. The last ritual is for the consecration of the new item. Once again call everyone into the circle, show them your completed project and ask for any blessings they wish to give. Make sure to thank the quarters and Lord and Lady for all the help and inspiration.
Now that you are done you’ve probably got left over material. You can either use some salt and remove the energy from the left over items or put them up in a safe place for the next magickal project.
I’ve found that even if I just ask for a little blessing on what my hands are doing the process becomes easier and I become happier. So if you aren’t ready to do all the things mentioned above that’s ok. Just call to the Lady and ask her to bless your hands and inspire you. For She changes everything She touches and everything She touches changes.
