Russell and Peter in bed together in the epsiode Strangers. This is the infamous scene that cost thirtysomething advertisers and was nearly pulled by ABC. Season Three - Episode 39 "nancy's mom" Nancy and her mom sip beer and discuss a man her mom met on the train coming to visit Nancy. Nancy tells her mom she and Elliot are seeing one another again, and try to sneak in some sex under Eleanor's nose.
- Episode 40 "love and sex" Brad Pitt guest starred in this episode where Michael and Hope are trying to get pregnant again. Hope's babysitter Lauren is madly in love with Brad Pitt and Hope finds herself jealous of their youth and excitement.
- Episode 41 "mr. right" Fed up with bad dates, Melissa and Ellyn go to a video dating service which does not prove to be much better. Melissa has Lee paint her apartment and he proves to be the best date for her.
- Episode 42 "new baby" Susannah is in labor and we see the clock go backwards to her baby shower, and early labor while they wait for the arrival of baby Emma.
- Episode 43 "legacy" A pivotal episode in content and design, Michael and Elliot have landed the account at Minnesota Brands. Ellyn meets Jeffrey, Hope quits her job at Synergy.
- Episode 44 "strangers" Melissa sets up her friend Russell with Michael's co-worker Peter. In the meantime she and Lee are falling in love but facing the issues of their 10+ age difference.
- Episode 45 "pilgrims" Elliot moves back in with Nancy and the kids and they decide to have Thanksgiving at their house. Ethan is afraid his dad will leave again and begins to act out as a series of robberies in the neighborhood frighten him.
- Episode 46 "the burning bush" Ellyn is seeing a married man, and Hope is wondering what to do about the drift in their friendship. Each fantacizes about their youth and high school years as friends. Hope and Ellyn wonder about the drift in their friendship.
- Episode 47 "new parents" Gary and Susannah struggle with the new job of being parents and the issues of daycare. Gary's mom Aileen comes to visit them and she tries to help Gary see that being a stay at home dad may not be his cup of tea.
- Episode 48 "michael's campaign" Karl Draconis doesn't like the fact that Michael and Elliot have sailed in with the Minnesota Brands account for Oh My Pies, without him being at the helm. Tempers and creative issues clash.
- Episode 49 "pulling away" Karl Draconis is fired when Miles realizes he has been trying to squash Michael and Elliot. Michael is asked to replace him as Creative Director of D.A.A. Hope is finding a new career of her own in a grass roots movement with a man named John Dunaway with the Fairfield Incinerator Project.
- Episode 50 "another country" A wonderful party is planned for Nancy and Ethan when their book "whose forest is this?" is published. Nancy in the meantime has not been feeling well, and goes to the doctor who later diagnoses her with ovarian cancer.
- Episode 51 "postop" Everyone comes to see Nancy and bring her bannana bread as she recovers from her surgery. Her sister Deb comes, along with her mom. They clash, as Nancy struggles to deal with what has happened to her.
- Episode 52"once a mermaid" Jeffrey Milgrom is interested in Ellyn as he bumps into her at the gym and pursues her. They begin an affair which is difficult for Ellyn to accept and she attempts to break it off.
- Episode 53 "fathers and lovers" Melissa's parents meet Lee and she secretly gets him a job at D.A.A. Melissa's dad in the meantime decides to buy Melissa's building so she can keep her apartment, much to her dismay.
- Episode 54 "her cup runneth over" aka: "the Thief". Jeffrey finally leaves his wife for Ellyn. She finds herself with his daughter and a whole new set of problems when he moves in with her.
- Episode 55 "good sex, some sex, what sex, no sex" Melissa and Lee are having endless sex, and everyone else is wishing they were. Melissa feels the age difference between herself and Lee and in a tearful goodbye decides she should let him go.
- Episode 56 "the other shoe" Nancy is feeling the need to express herself by writing a sequel to "whose forest is this", without Ethan. She had met a woman at Victory Partners, a Cancer support group that is changing her life and causing some problems at home. Inj the end, Nancy gets her red car and a birthday surprise from Elliot that was spectacular.
- Episode 57 "three year itch" The Farifield Incinerator Project ends, and Hope is disappointed and wondering what she should do next. John Dunaway, talks her into going to Washington D.C. to look at a job, and there they meet and Hope comes very close to having an affair. Guilty, she goes home wondering if she should tell Michael, about what "almost" happened.
- Episode 58 "i'm nobody, who are you?" Gary wants to be able to buy his daughter Emma everything she needs, but he can't afford too. Michael offers to invest money for him, and their friendship takes a hit until they decide against it. In the meantime, Hope reaches out to Susannah when Emma gets sick and the two women bond. Gary sees Emily Dickinson in his fantacies as he heads back to work to teach a class about her.
- Episode 59 "arizona" Hope's parents are celebrating their 40th wedding anniversary in Arizona, which Michael and Hope attend. Not before Michael catches on that there is some attraction between Hope and John Dunaway. Scenes from the marriage are moving and explosive as the couple look at the disappointments they feel in one another before finding each other again.
- Episode 60 "going limp" Ellyn decides to take another chance on Michael and Elliot by giving them a promotional ad to do for the city of Philidelphia. Elliot wants to direct it, and it becomes a bit explosive as Elliot's creative energy collides with his friendship with Michael and the ever watchful Miles Drentell.
- Episode 61 "the go between" (aka: "the towers of zenith", I) Miles and Michael head to Minnesota to woo Minnesota Brands, there they approach Michael about a hostile takeover of D.A.A. using Michael as a spy. Meanwhile Miles wants to fire Elliot, which Micheal does in order to secure Mile's trust.
- Episode 62 "samurai adman" (aka: "the towers of zenith", 2) The takeover begins, but Miles is catching on and before Michael can act fast enough to secure D.A.A. Miles purchases the majority shares and confronts Michael and Elliot. Elliot gets his job back, and they remain at D.A.A.
