Season Four

  • Episode 63 "prelude to a bris" Religion comes up again for the Steadmans after the birth of Baby Leo and they try to decide whether or not he should have a circumcision.  Michael's mother comes to visit with her new boyfriend Ben, whom Michael has decided not to like.
  • Episode 64 "life class" Nancy is teaching an art class and pondering the loss of her sexual drive through fantacies most of which are centered around one of her art students.
  • Episode 65 "control" Miles is not quite over the hostile takeover attempt, and Michael is certain his efforts to date Melissa is yet another retribution for his acts.  
  • Episode 66 "the distance" Jeffrey leaves Ellyn without warning.  Susannah is offered a great job in New York, but after a harried visit to see the city, Gary decides he can't live there.  They opt to live apart and see one another when they can, but they also agree to get married before she goes.
  • Episode 67 "the haunting of d.a.a." Miles is haunting D.A.A. more than anyone else is when he asks Michael to lay-off 100 employees because they lost Minnesota Brands.  He then has a wild Halloween party at which many blame Michael for doing Miles' bidding.
  • Episode 68 "the guilty party" Princeton sends Hope a letter wanting to know what is happening in her life.  Feeling like nothing is, Hope opts to throw a surprise birthday party for Michael.  It starts out a disaster but laters proves beneficial for all involved including Miles. 
  • Episode 69 "photo opportunity" Vanity Fair magazine wants Melissa to photograh an eccentric author in N.Y. that no one else can get close to.  She goes to N.Y. and stays with her sister.  Meanwhile her mother injures herself and Melissa is trying to do the assignment while still caring for her mom.
  • Episode 70 "never better" Gary and Ellyn become close.  They are both dealing with their lonliness since Jeffrey is gone and Susannah is in N.Y.  They bump in Billy Sidell at a movie and sparks fly between he and Ellyn.
  • Episode 71 "guns and roses" Cancer is taking Nancy's energy under the toll of chemo as Ethan begins getting beat up by someone at school.
  • Episode 72 "happy new year" The Steadmans met on New Year's Eve and they decide to have a party.  Ellyn is obsessing about Billy, Gary misses Susannah, and Melissa wonders why Gary dumps baby Emm on her while he goes out.  Hope gets a call that one of her high school boyfriends was killed.  She and Michael are at odds, while Elliot gets plastered and Peter and Russell seem to make up. 
  • Episode 73 "melissa and men" Melissa gets her first gallery show and in picking out her photos to show.  She chooses those that are of all the men in her life.  She feels alone, especially when an old high school friend shows up and leads her on only to bring someone else to her show.  Lee shows up.... 
  • Episode 74 "advanced beginners" Billy's old girlfriend Madison decides to pay he and Ellyn at visit, which proves to undo their relationship when Ellyn finds out her slept with her after they started seeing each other.  They part...but not for long. 
  • Episode 75 "sifting the ashes"  Nancy'slast chemotherapy and second look  are around the corner when Elliot gets a chance to go to Baltimore for business.  There he finds an old high school friend is at the business he goes to, who then tries to manipulate him because of jealously in high school.  He goes to see his mother who is now sober, and struggles with why she never came to see Nancy when she was ill.  He also searches himself for his own beliefs about God and his Catholic faith.
  • Episode 76 "second look" Nancy has her second look and is cleared of Cancer.  The group is surprised by an unexpected loss. 
  • Episode 77 "fighting the cold" There is a funeral for a friend.  Michael seems determined to be the one responsible for everything while everyone stuggles with their profound loss. 
  • Episode 78 "the difference between men and women" The men have a stag party for Billy, while the women have a bachelorette party for Ellyn.  A humorous look at the differences between men and women.  
  • Episode 79 "our wedding" Ellyn's dad is not coming to her wedding, and she struggles with why all the men in her life seem to walk out on her.  She questions Billy's love and her love for him.  Melissa sees Lee and they reunite.  The wedding takes place.
  • Episode 80 "closing the circle" Michael seems compelled to deal with Gary's estate much to Susannah's diapproval.  He is struggling with the loss of his friend, while Susannah seems to be getting on with her life.  A friend from work is diagnosed with AIDS.
  • Episode 81 "out the door" Miles is still on Elliot's back, he leaves D.A.A.  This causes Michael to feel yet another profound loss.   
  • Episode 82 "hopeless" Hope decides to volunteer her time at a homeless shelter.
  • Episode 83 "a stop at willoughby" An actor Michael hired for a campaign is fired when he is seen protesting the Gulf War.  Michael feels this is unfair, and once again struggles with feeling like he is selling out.  In an effort to feel better he decides to quit D.A.A.
  • Episode 84 "melissa in wonderland" Melissa is hired to shoot photos for the Bernie Joy show in California.  She befriends the actress who plays Bernie Joy, and ends up being a role model for the show. 
  • Episode 85 "california" Michael goes to California for a job interview, where he meets Elliot and they again decide to go out on their own through Miles Drentell.  Hope does not want to go backwards though an instead pursues her own efforts to be on her own again.
