A Question came into the list a while back about the meaning of the title of the episode, "the Burning Bush", The episode looks closely at Hope and Ellyn's friendship, and it begins by going back to 1970, and then back to present day throughout the episode. EXT.
Superimposed "1970" over a long shot of lower Merion High School. There is the distant sound of a bell ringing, a moment of peace and quiet, and then vintage TEENAGERS emerge from various doors, but not too many, because the day is not over yet.
Two girls are running toward us down a hill, laughing.
They are Hope and Ellyn in their high school incarnations" a [pair of brash know-it-alls with no fears they'll admit to and entirely too much barely suppressed sexual energy. Ellyn/17 is dressed entirely in black tights, ballet slippers, short skirt, and baggy stretched out turtleneck. Hope/17 is dressed in a denim skirt, and over that plaid workshirt. She has on tights, scuffed leather boots, big Indian earrings, and many large rings.
they reach a line of tall bushes that screens the tennis courts. Looking around to makes sure no one is watching, they duck through a gap in the branches.
2. INSIDE THE HEDGE
is an open areas that forms a room big enough for six or seven people to sit comfortably, thought it';s openly perhaps five feet high at the highest point. This is the Burning Bush, the secret place to sneak an illicit lunch-time cigarette.
