thithirtysomething in Germany.....
Petra petra@ When I watched "Thirtysomething" on German television - titled "the best years" - in the middle of the 90s I was fascinated right from the beginning. The show was telecasted, more or less completely, by various TV stations at night. I have never been able to find special recommendations or articles at great length in our TV guides. As People usually watch the telecasts they have especially been pointed out the show has probably not reached many viewers. As to me the series was a real work of art and something absolutely new.
At the time me and my family were on holiday in Florida. Amerika for the first time!! TV -sets everywhere and lots of channels. Unfortunately, I couldn't find any of the faces that had become familiar to me. But on the day we were about to leave I asked the family we were staying with about the show. I told them the artists' names and forced an open door. The parents and even their grown-up children knew the show and loved it. They had even lived in Philadelphia, Chestnut Hill, years before. It was there that I heard the strange title "thirtysomething" for the first time. As we had to leave the next day I couldn't see Hope, Michael, etc. in the original American version.
Years passed by since then and I am missing TS and the creators' shows on German TV. Only yesterday I made an inquiriy with a TV station. But I still have some tapes which are quite worn-out in the meantime. Even now I can see something new every time I watch them - some details, references or coherences.
TS has been accompanying my everyday life for years. I often remember similar topics from the series and their answers to the problems. I would even say that if I had watched TS 20 years ago I would have seen and done things in a different way. Maybe I would have made different decisions.
On the occasion of my 50th birthday last week I was surprised by my son with a video tape including the 2001 Reunion Gathering and 5 original episodes. Unfortunately I am not able to understand a lot of the original eps, but I know what they say at heart. Much to my delight I can fianlly seeand listen to Herskovitz and Zwick, the creators of the show.
