SHOES & FASHION

- - WHAT DO I WEAR? - -
For Class:
For Men: dress pants or nice slacks, a button down shirt or a golf shirt, a tie is optional.
For Ladies: skirts and dresses with room for movement or nice dress slacks, a blouse or top that also allows for movement.
For Shoes: to start classes a leather bottom dress shoe is acceptable and will help you slide and turn, which a rubber sole will not allow. If you are enjoying the dancing, you should invest in Ballroom Shoes. (see information below)
 - -  What NOT to Wear - -
Clothing:  Jeans, Shorts or Sweatclothes
Shoes: Tennis Shoes, or any rubber soles, Sandals or Flip Flops
Hats: No Hats

For Dances and Socials: Dinner Party Attire
What would you be wearing you were going out on a date with your spouse or partner or to a friends for a dinner party?  It is time to pull out that outfit that you bought for that unexpected special occation, that is too dressy for work.  Even if you have been together for years, it is nice to see everyone dressed up.

For Showcases and Competitions: The invitation will indicate.
Black Tie is always acceptable for the more formal events. Tails are ususually for those will be performing, but completely acceptable.  Ladies can wear Cocktail length of Full Gowns, just take in consideration if there will be open dancing so your dress provides you with movement and the length is short enough to keep your partner from stepping on your dress.

- - WHAT KIND OF SHOES SHOULD I WEAR? - -
The Proper Style of Shoes are Ballroom Dance Shoes.
If you were playing golf you would wear golf shoes, if you were going to run you would wear running shoes, if you were going to dance...you get the picture.

Ballroom Dance shoes have a suede bottom to allow you to slide but keeps you from slipping.  The soles are also flexable to allow you use your entire foot - heel to toe - to move vs. a dress shoe that has a strong unflexable sole.
Both men's and women's dance shoe have a steel shank in the heel to support your weight and are placed directly under the inside of your heel so your weight is not pushed to your toes as in ladies dress heels.
The leather or fabric is very flexible for total comfort.

When purchasing shoes you may want to find a dance supply store in your neighborhood to try on the shoes and become familar with sizing and the manufacturer.  The better shoes are from England, Italy and Germany. Becareful of the recommendation of purchasing your shoes too small.  If it is recommended you move down 2 sizes from you normal size DON'T.  Only go 1 to 1and1/2.  After a full days work and an hour of dancing your swolen feet will be thankful.  Also if you wear your shoes on a hard surface (even for an hour) to try them out they will NOT be returnable.  Save yourself the hastle of shipping, when ordering through a catalog, or returning to a store by ordering a pair of shoes that are too snug.  If they are a little loose, take it from a full time dancer, you can put a shoe cushion in for comfort.
