Playing A Pan Hand With the Late Mac James

A Series of Classic Hands from Pan: The Gambler’s Card Game by Mac James

Now we’re going to deal out some hands and play some Pan. These are typical hands containing the kinds of traps which we fall into if we aren’t careful. Get out your Pan deck and play along.

Hand #2      6H 5H 5C 7H 7D 7S JH QD KC KC

Play or pass? Rule of EIGHT PLAY; SEVEN WITH PAY -- the sevens are pat for one, the Kings play, and two of the three cards in the group 5C 5H 6H play. (If I catch the 4H or another 7H, the 5C becomes a discard. If it’s a good 5 then the 6 is the throwaway card.) Add it up: Seven useable cards with pay can play. When the hand starts, I have hopes of making two valley spreads -- 5’s and 7’s. I catch the 4H first and meld the 4-5-6 rope, ending hopes of melding the 5’s. I also meld 7H 7D and 7S and call for one chip. I didn’t hold up the sevens because they were worth money. If the 7’s were square cards worth no money, there would be no advantage to melding them when I caught the 6H, and I would hold them up. I discard the QD. My Second catch is the KD, and, since bottoms and tops don’t have to follow the Rule of Three, I meld my Kings and discard the 5C. I’m holding one card, the JH, and I have three spreads.

Now a nice card comes, another 7H. Here’s a chance to go wrong. An experienced player might put the 7H with his other 7’s and discard the JH. Sad for him! He has just thrown away the card that puts him out. Put that second 7H on the 4-5-6 and presto, there’s a place for the JH on the rope. Instead of 4H 5H 6H, 7H 7H 7D 7S, KC KC KH with the JH discarded, the hand should be: 4H 5H 6H 7H JH, 7H 7D 7S, KC KC KH -- and out for three chips, please! That second 7H is put to better use on the rope, isn’t it?

Let’s total up the profit with four players paying me, and three chips paid out by me for pay cards by the other players: I get four chips per player (1 each when I melded the 7’s, 3 apiece when I go out + 8 antes)

...........................................................................................................................24 Chips

I paid four chips (1 ante and 3 pays).........................................................................4 Chips

20 Chips Net Profit
