Playing A Pan Hand With the Late Mac James

A Series of Classic Hands from Pan: The Gambler’s Card Game by Mac James

Now we’re going to deal out some hands and play some Pan. These are typical hands containing the kinds of traps which we fall into if we aren’t careful. Get out your Pan deck and play along.

Hand #6      4D 4C JC JH JS QH QS KC KC KD

The rule of EIGHT PLAY; SEVEN WITH PAY shows that we have eight working cards; three Kings, three Jacks and either two 4’s or two Queens (not both - we can’t make four spreads). Two other players are in, and neither is a weak player. My first hit is the KS. Now, I start some thinking. If I take the KS on the other Kings, it’s a good spread for no money. I like chips, so I take KS QS JS and collect two. I really seemed to rip up my hand, didn’t I? No more pair of Queens, no more three good Jacks. And since I am tearing apart pairs and threes of a kind, why not go all the way and discard one of the fours? Goodbye to the 4D. I have KS QS JS on the board. I have 4C JC JH QC KC KC KD left in my hand. Don’t worry, I’ve got a plan. Later, the KH comes my way. One chip, please, for the KH QH JH. I throw the 4C, and I have JC KC KC KD left in my hand. Look at the next hit -- the QC. KC QC JC collects one chip. But then what do I throw away -- one of the two Kings left over? Not at all. I go out instead! It’s the grand switch. The play where every card which I have melded is moved to a different spread. I put the KS KH and KC from the three ropes together and I had the two Kings I am holding -- 5 Kings. The three Queens from the ropes for a good three of a kind in Queens, and so do the Jacks. I’m out. Notice that I have no pay spreads left, and where I had three ropes, I now have none, but rather have three sets of three of a kind. I paid a total of four chips before going out, so here’s how I did on the hand:

Four Chips from each player for my three spreads……………………8 Chips

Two Chips from each player for going out……………………………..4 Chips

Antes………………………………..................................................................8 Chips

Sub Total……………………………….........................................................20 Chips

Less the 4 Chips I paid and ante………………………………...................5 Chips

Grand Total………………………………......................................................15 Chips
