Saving (Storing) & Uploading (Adding)
Graphics (Pictures)

These instructions are designed to walk you through the following processes:
  1. Create a folder on your own computer for storing collected images.
  2. Save a graphic from the web successfully.
  3. Create a new photo album on MSN to display your collected images.
  4. Successfully upload (save to the web) your newly found images.

  1. Create a folder on your own computer for storing collected images.
You may wish to create your very own folder(s) on your computer to organize and save all the fancy little animations and pretty pictures you come across while surfing groups.

Many people already have a "My Pictures" folder on their computer system.
It can be found by double-clicking on the main "My Documents" folder.

    To create a new folder:
    • Right-click on an empty space (either on your desktop or while within another folder on your computer).
    • Select "New" from the menu which pops-up and pick "folder" from the choices offered.
    • A "New Folder" will appear on the screen with the default name of "New Folder" highlighted in blue.
    • You may either leave the default name or type a new one now.

    Working with your new folder:
    • Double-clicking the left mouse button on the folder icon will open the new folder.
    • If you wish to change the name of the folder later, just right-click on its icon and choose "Rename" from the menu offered. Type a new name to replace the old one.
    • You may move the entire folder to a different location by pointing to the folder icon, holding down the left mouse button and dragging the entire folder towards another folder's icon. Once over the folder icon representing the new location, let the mouse button up and your folder will be dropped into the new area.

  2. Saving graphics from the web successfully.
    • Locate the graphic you wish to save.
    • If it is in thumbnail (small preview) form, double-click on it to open to the full size.
    • After the graphic has opened all the way: right-click on it, then choose "Save Picture As..."
    • Choose the folder you have created for saving your special graphics.
    • Then hit the "Save" button.
    • Your graphic is now safely stored in your new folder, on your own computer.

Images can be stored in common formats like .bmp (bitmap), .jpg (mostly for photo images), .png or .gif (which store transparencies and animations).

! From time to time Internet Explorer glitches and refuses to save an animated .gif file as anything but a static .bmp image. It is a known problem: MS Knowledge Base Article - 260650 which can usually be remedied by clearing your browser's temporary files to make room. !

  3. Create a new photo album on MSN to display your collected images.
    • Visit your group's main Pictures page by clicking on the link in the left navigation area.
    • Click on the Create a new album to make a fresh place to house your photos online.
    • You may name the album anything descriptive "Backgrounds" or "Buttons" or "Banners" are some of the most common. Avoid using punctuation or any specialized characters in your album name since they can sometimes cause problems later. Just stick to the standard 0-9/A-Z format. Spaces are fine, although they will be edited out in the final URL. Your album name can be up to 32 characters long. Avoid naming it Pictures, since this is already the name of the main album.
    • You may also add a block of text here as a description. The description may be up to 256 characters including spaces. You may edit the description later.
    • You will be asked to set permissions for the album from the three choices.
      1. Members may add and delete any photo in this album.
      2. Members may add, edit, and delete their own photos.
      3. Only the album creator and managers may add and delete photos.
Setting #2, Members may add, edit, and delete their own photos is usually a safe bet which will not leave you too restricted in adding images from multiple passports/nicknames.

    • Finalize the process by clicking on the Create Album Button.

  4. Successfully upload (save to the web) your newly found images.
    • Visit your album by clicking on the name.
    • Click on the Add Photos link.
(Alternatively, you can just click on the group's main Pictures page, then select the Add Photos there.)
    • The first time you use the photo albums, you will be asked if you would like to install the MSN Photo Upload Control. It is a small, temporary file stored on your computer to make finding and adding multiple photos easier. It is strongly recommended that you allow it. Just click the "OK" prompts and MSN will install it for you.
    • Once this is completed, you will see a new menu appear to the left of the screen, similar to Windows Explorer.
    • By clicking on the folders listed there (and the +/- signs) you can browse through your hard drive to locate the folder on your computer in which you saved your graphics.
    • When you select a folder in the left-hand panel which contains images, they will be displayed as thumbnail images in the right-hand panel of the Photo Upload Tool.
! Note: with slow dial-up connections, busy periods on MSN or while using an older computer, you may find the thumbnails take several minutes to appear. The more images in a single folder, the longer it takes for MSN's tool to display them all.!
    • Scroll through your thumbnailed images until you locate the image(s) you wish to add to your MSN album.
    • Each thumbnail has a small checkbox. Clicking the mouse button while pointing at this box will add a checkmark and add it to the list of images to be uploaded. Clicking the box a second time will de-select it from the list.
    • If you wish to rename the image before adding it to your album, you can click the mouse on its name in the thumbnail view and MSN will prompt you to type a new name.
    • There is an option to "Edit Photo" for the currently selected image. We recommend that you do any editing and resizing in a separate graphics program prior to attempting to upload the image (since most graphics programs are more efficient). If you do not have a graphics editor installed, MSN's Photo Upload tool will do in a pinch.
    • Scroll back to the top of the Photo Upload tool and click the button marked "Upload Now"
    • Your images should appear in your new album. From time to time MSN is over-burdened with traffic and the images may take several minutes to change from the placeholder image to the actual thumbnail of your image. Just be patient, they will show up. Sometimes just hitting your browser's Refresh button will show them.

Important Note For Larger Images Or Animated .gifs:
At the very bottom of the photo upload tool (scroll down to find it) there is a section marked:

    Optional:
    Resize Photo
    Standard size (recommended)
    - Resized photo will be at most 600 pixels wide or tall.
Small size - Resized photo will be at most 440 pixels wide or tall.
    Don't resize

You may need to select the "Don't resize" option to prevent MSN from "squishing" your images and rendering them too small to use as backgrounds.

! "Squished" animated .gifs will not function and
will only show a single static image rather than motion. !
