| One problem with new folks is they simply don't understand what tables are or how they are used. Consider it this way: Backgrounds are dead things........ The background is that, an image in the background, like what you see out the window. Now the background is just a dead thing you can ouch anymore than you can touch the mountains you see out your window. Tables & Windows........... Tables are like windows or better yet the frame of the window. Tables are made up of Rows (TR) and Columns that create Cells (TD) where they interesect. The Table is a framework for the glass panels that you can size to what you need or even hide as if you made window frames out of plexiglass. Cells are where the work is done...... Cells are the glass in that frame. You can work with each glass pane (cell) giving it its own color, background or size. You can write in it like taking a marker to your window glass and writing "over" the background picture. Or you can paste a image or graphic to it like hanging a magazine photo on your window. This is done with the img src=" " tag. (NOTE: Only images and text in cells can be linked, not backgrounds) The thing with the nest...... You can "Nest" tables, that is to say place a new table within a cell of another table. Much like older style windows that have a smaller window in them that opens seperately. This improves your ability to structure your information. You can nest as many tables as you like as deep as you like, but....... Rule of thumb is not to nest any deeper than 3 levels if you can avoid it. The so called "Screen Readers" and other broesers and browser add ons for the Blind and other handicapped may be confused when they hit deeply nested tables and the resulting info for the user may be all but useless One needs to clearly understand the meaning of backgrounds, tables and cells before you start so you can grasp what it is you want to do and what it is we are trying to explain to you. NOTE: Tables are much like so called "Frames" on real web sites. These to act as a frame as the name suggests, the difference is tables show a graphical background. Frames in turn show a different HTML page in each section rather than a image. © Copyright Web Design, LSW, 2002 - 2003 |
