Hacker: A hacker is actually one of the good guys. As a hacker, I learn to combat computer threats and build "patches" and anti-virus programs and firewalls. It is a hollywood misconception that hackers are bad.

Cracker: A cracker is the person who harms computer systems, builds viruses, and tries to take over your computer.

Virus: A computer program which instructs your computer to do things it should not.

Worm: A type of virus which enters your system for the sole purpose of sending out information without your consent.

Trojan horse: A type of worm

Firewall: A physical barrier between your computer and the internet. It helps prevent viruses and cracker attacks.

Patch: A small program designed to be added onto a older program to help it resist new threats or strengthen any weaknesses

Virus scanner: A program which scans your system for any virus threats (must be updated continually)

... to be continued - more will be added here as the need becomes apparent.

You can not completely protect your computer, all you can do is make it as hard as possible for an outsider to harm your computer. Always update your virus scanner regularly and make sure you are careful on your journeys online.
