ABOUT OPERA HOUSE SQUARE
A Lagoon brochure from around 1972 invites guests to "See the Historic Pioneer West at the Lagoon Opera House". But that may not be all that accurate. Many would say the style of the buildings is based more on the late 19th Century and early 20th Century. This area was built before Pioneer Village.
Some of the buildings in Opera House Square have recently been remodeled and it looks better than it has in years. Opera House Square originally featured:
LAGOON OPERA HOUSE - This was a popular entertainment venue, not only at Lagoon but the entire Wasatch Front, from its opening in 1968 until the 1980s. It hasn't been open to visitors since 1989.
GASLIGHT RESTAURANT - I'll let Sid explain: "The Gaslight Restaurant originally served gourmet hamburgers, salads, soup, and bread bowls. Jabooka Jooce was added to the menu in 1998 when Lagoon bought a Jabooka Jooce franchise". Jabooka Jooce was also sold in the old Parkway Pizza building near Wild Mouse starting in 1998 (it has since become Teriyaki Stix). In 2001 the Gaslight Restaurant re-opened as an Arby's.
GASLIGHT SANDWICH SHOP -
ICE CREAM PARLOUR - This shop served visitors until after the 1995 season. In 1996, the building was remodeled and transformed into a Subway restaurant, Lagoon's first franchise restaurant.
SWEET SHOP - A candy shop which was popular for saltwater taffy.
