1988-199_
Location: North Midway
Notes: This outdoor theater was built where the Sky Coaster is now. There were two bleachers in the area facing opposite directions. The concrete grandstand was facing north towards the Rodeo Grounds. Then metal bleachers were set up facing south for the Sun & Fun Theater behind the concrete grandstand. The Theater opened with a High Diving & Sea Lion Show in 1988. In a 21 April 1989 Deseret News article, the current director of the entrtainment division spoke of the park's plans for the show:
"...plans include a tall-masted boat anchored toward the west side of the lagoon, where the high-divers and seals featured last season would perform. (They're not scheduled to appear during 1989 but should be back in their new surroundings in 1990.)"
I don't know what happened to these plans. Personally, I think that would have been a great idea. I haven't found any information on any shows at the Sun & Fun Theater in 1990 or 1991, but in 1992 the International High Diving Show featured divers from all over the world. You can find all kinds of information and photos from the show by clicking here. I'm also not sure when they stopped using it or when the pool & bleachers for this theater were removed, but it was definitely before 1995 when the Sky Coaster was built. All that is left of the theater is a metal gate that is now used for Sky Coaster. This gate had blue and yellow metal work welded to the top which was left from the Sun & Fun Theater, but was removed for some reason late in the 2005 season.
