Bathtub Bash
|
Make your bathtub into a hamster playground. Add hamster-safe toys, a sand bath, cardboard boxes or tubes, hidden treats, etc. Let your hamster have some free time to play without your supervision. The good thing about it is that it's escape-free (except if one of the boxes is too tall. I did have one hamster who flung himself out of the bathtub by leaping from a tall box!).

Cardboard Tube Connecters
|
You have to get cardboard tubes from toilet paper and paper towels. You can tape them together. Then lay it diagonally from your bed to your floor. At the end of the tunnel, put a cardboard box with a soft blanket so your hamster can climb up and down. Make sure it's a tall tissue box so your hamster can't climb out at the top. You can have another tissue box.

Cookie Jar/Fish Bowl Bath
|
Pick up a small cheap clear glass fishbowl or one of those old fashioned, clear glass, cookie/candy containers. Fill it's bottom with Chinchilla sand. Both fishbowls and old fashioned cookie/candy containers have flat sides, so turn it on it's side and arrange the sand. Push some bedding material toward the opening of the bowl/jar so that Hammies can reach the entrance easily and "voila"! A sand bath that is mostly enclosed to keep more sand "IN" where it belongs. It is also easy to clean due to the large opening, the glass can be properly sanitized in a dishwasher that has a sanitize cycle, hammy can't chew the glass and you can have a great view of hammy since it is a see-through container.

Daily Surprise
|
To pique your hamster's curiosity and prevent boredom, try to introduce one new item into your hamster's environment each day. It could be a new treat, a branch of safe wood, a wooden block, a hard nut, a cardboard box, a paper bag, a large container, etc. Be sure it's hamster-safe. The next day remove it and use something new.

Easy endless fun your hammy!

Fill a empty 10 gallon tank (that's not your hammy's main home) and fill it to the brim with bedding. Your hammy will have a blast digging and digging! (and making a mess) You can also build a Super Pet puzzle playground and put it under the bedding so that it is a underground playground! :0)

Exploring Outside
|
I bought a leash for my hamster so I could take her outside, and she loves to sit and eat grass. (Note: Make sure the leash isnt too tight or loose, and that you keep your hamster away from gardens sprayed with pesticide, garbage, etc.) (Another note: leashes are only fun for calmer hamsters that let you put the leash on them)

Follow the Food
|
Take a hamster treat, something very small. Let's say it's rolled oats. Place just one of these every inch in a straight line on a flat surface. Put your hamster at the first oat. Watch him as he eats them up in a straight line. Measure how far he goes. Try it again on another day. See if he exceeds his "record" of the day before. You can substitute other favorite treats. They should all be the same kind on the same day and the same size. You can also test which are the favorites by seeing how many of the treats are eaten.

Hammie fun in bed
|
Take all the covers off a bed. Than take a hamster and put him in the bed. Cover the bed with treats and surprises. Then your hamster is ready to jump. Take about 3 pillows and stack them up. Then put a couple treats on the stack. Show the fuzzball what's down there. They'll slide right off the bed, hit the pillows, and have a treat. It's fun for the both of you. [Mgr's note: Do not allow your hamster to jump directly on the hard floor. A fall from a high place to a hard surface may result in injury or death of a hamster].

Igloo Dig Box

I found out that the mini igloo I bought for a nesting house was too big for my two dwarfs, so I just had it laying around. It serves as a good digging box if you turn it over and fill it with Carefresh and bury treats in it. Your ham can climb up into the "doorway" platform and then dive in.

Peanut butter snack
|
My hamster LOVES peanut butter! I was feeding her some on my finger, and she tried to stuff my finger in her cheek pouch! Anyway, this is a good snack to give your hammy : First, take a piece of bread and flatten it so it's thin. Second, you can cut the bread into a smaller piece for your ham. Third, spread peanut butter on the piece bread (not too much). Fourth, take the piece of bread and sprinkle hamster food all over it, make sure you cover all of the peanut butter. Then give it to your hamster, and he'll eat it all up!

Pick and Choose
|
This should be fun for both you and your hamster. Make a large circle of hamster treats. Each treat should be different. Be creative. Use grains, nuts, fruits, veggies. Use only a small bite of each. Next, place your hamster in the center of the circle. See which treat he eats first, second, and so forth. It's a good way to learn which foods your hamster likes best. For some food suggestions that are safe, take a peek at Pet Web Site's Feeding Your Hamster. My daughter had great fun doing this as part of a school science experiment using only different kinds of nuts with our hamster. Our family tried really hard to predict which was the favorite nut. We were all wrong! Try it yourself to see what happens.

Private Playground
|
Fill a plastic or cardboard box (preferrably transparent) up to 5 fingers before the brim (so it won't try to climb out and fall!) and hide some toilet rolls deep inside. Also, stuff in some carrot bits, cold grapes (seedless!) and/or bits of graham crackers etc. in the sawdustbox. Let your ham in and let it play for a while in it. Watch it burrow and play in the tunnels, finding treats! Each time it stays under the sawdust for almost 2 mins, handfeed a treat/praise it. Add othe ham-safe toys like paper cups, blocks etc to add to the fun. That'll keep your ham busy besides letting it sleep all day! =)

Sandbox Time
|
If you've never provided a sandbox for your ham, this is a MUST! Use chinchilla sand (never chinchilla dust). Open a packet of it into a sturdy high-walled flat container. Place this inside a cardboard box (to avoid scattering the sand all over your house). Place your hamster inside and watch him start rolling and digging! It may take a few tries until he catches on to what to do, but he'll eventually love it. It's also a great way to keep your hamster's coat from getting too greasy.

All my hammies loved this. Wear a long sleeved shirt, a long sleeved shirt with a collar, or, even better, a sweater with a hood. This will work withpants, too. Next, take your hammy, and show her the opening to your sleeve. If she is a tunneling hammy, she'll go right in. Hold your arm out, and let her crawl right up to your shoulders. You need to get someone else to retrieve them when they crawl onto your back, though! Also, if you don't want your hammy in your shirt, place her on your shirt next to a collar or hood. She'll crawl right under it and try to burrow. It's really cute!
