The history of the Galaxy is a long and complex one –
spanning many centuries, and encompassing billions of lives and the rise and fall of entire civilisations, single events ought to count for nothing…yet the discovery of the Metroids on SR-388, even on so vast a timescale, remains an event like no other. So dangerous were these killers, and so grave a threat was posed by their raw power, that the fear of them overshadowed the many years of peace that preceded their discovery, to the extent that it is difficult to even recall a time when the Galaxy has not lived in constant fear of the Metroid menace. Yet, even throughout this dark time, there has remained one person who stands like a beacon of hope in the shadow of this threat – the Space Hunter, Samus Aran. And, for the first time, it seemed like her battle could finally be coming to an end.
Even though the Federation maintained a composed façade throughout the Metroid crises on Zebes, Tallon IV and SR-388, it remained apparent that at the highest level, little hope was held for Samus’s prospects on her fateful mission to SR-388 - even with her experience, the hope that a lone person would be able to conquer an entire planet of Metroids seemed too distant to even consider. New plans were already being formulated when the news that no one had dared to expect arrived – Samus Aran had returned unscathed
from the Metroid home world, bringing news that every single Metroid on the planet had been dispatched, with even the gargantuan Queen Metroid dead at Samus’s mighty hand. Moreover, Samus had managed to preserve a single Metroid larva, the last of the species, which followed her like a confused child would its mother. The mission had been a success, the likes of which no one in the Galaxy could have ever even dreamt of – not only had the Metroid threat been indefinitely neutralised, but a harmless specimen now also existed for testing and research. The Galaxy’s scientific community could not contain their enthusiasm – the Metroid larva was immediately delivered by Samus to the Space Science Academy on the space colony Ceres for research on the creature’s energy producing capabilities. The results astounded even the researchers – it transpired that the Metroid, once the Galaxy’s bane, possessed unparalleled power that might be harnessed for the good of civilisation. Though no one dared believe it, the impossible seemed to have happened: the last Metroid was in captivity. The Galaxy was, finally, at peace. Satisfied all was well, Samus departed Ceres to seek her next bounty. However, at that moment, cruel fate intervened. No sooner had Samus reached the asteroid belt surrounding Ceres that a distress signal was activated – Ceres Station had come under attack! Samus returned immediately to the station, only to find all the researchers lying dead on the floor, and the Metroid larva in the scaly clutches of Ridley, the feared leader of the Space Pirate Army. Giving chase, Samus escaped the self-destructing station, only to find herself landing on an all too-familiar planet – the former Space Pirate stronghold, Zebes.
Thus, far from being at an end, Samus Aran’s
problems are only just beginning again. Her worst fears have come to pass – the grotesque Mother Brain, along with her huge and powerful lieutenants, have somehow not only regrouped and rebuilt their legions of vicious soldiers, but they have also salvaged the remains of their ruined underground facility on Zebes and reinforced it, making it more intricate and lethal than ever. Old enemies from Samus’s deadly past have returned to take their revenge, joined now by a whole host of hideous new creatures who will stop at nothing to prevent Samus from once again infiltrating Zebes and recovering the Metroid hatchling before the Pirates can carry out their nefarious schemes. Once again, the fate of the Galaxy lies in Samus’s hands alone; can she do the impossible by repeating history, and save the Metroid larva – and the Galaxy itself – once again?
More coming soon...
