Dragon Hunting Guide

Basic Skills and Equipment

Dragons hit moderately on melee. Their main weapon is their fire breath, which can hit over 47 damage if you aren't properly prepared! After starting or completing the Dragon Slayer Quest, one can go to Duke Horacio in Lumbridge Castle for a free Antifire shield, which effectively protects you from dragon breath.
Another protective measure is an Anti-fire Potion, which works like the shield and can be made at Herblore level 69 (see Herblore Skill Guide).

One should also bring good a weapon and armor. I personally bring full rune with an Anti fire shield and a Dragon or Rune weapon to kill dragons. Also bring a lot of good food.
A person's pack inventory should be:

  1. 2 or 3 spaces for teleportation runes
  2. A nearly full inventory of at least lobsters (leave 1 or 2 empty spaces as the hides do fill you up quickly!).

Also, if you are going to range or hally or mage dragons, wear the Antifire shield until you are in your spot, to be safe.

Green Dragons

A Green Dragon

Green dragons are level 79, so a combat level of at least 65 is suggested. They live in the Wilderness only, so there is a potential hazard to fight them. A good place to fight them is just north-west of Edgeville in level 11 wilderness, directly west-ish of the dark castle. If you feel a little worried about your armor even with the teleportation runes, I like to bring only Rune legs, plate and Antifire shield, though it means the dragons will hit you more often. There are no ranger or maging spots here for the most part, unless you manage to stand on the rim of the dragon area and shoot down at them. Try to keep your run energy up in case of a trigger happy PK'er. Go back to the bank when your food gets really low to deposit the spoils and you'll be fine.

Level 50+ rangers (thats 50 range, not 50 combat) should take the following: blue dragonhide body and chaps, magic shortbow, and a small supply of cheap arrows (300 bronze etc.). Attack a dragon that is relatively close to a log or tree then run around to the opposite side until the dragon stops moving. Now, move one step to the left or right (not toward or away from the dragon or it will come around tree). This may take a little practice but after you find the right position you will be able to pop away at the helpless creature until it drops its 4.5K+ worth of items. Pick up your arrows then rinse and repeat until fully loaded or out of arrows. A level 50+ ranger can make over 30K per hour in this spot if he buries the dragon bones or even more if he/she sells the bones too.

There is, however, a certain green dragon spawn point that is excellent for ranging. It is in level 24 wilderness between the Graveyard of Shadows and The Ruins. There are many dead trees around here that can be used for cover by mid-high level rangers who wish to safely kill greens One of these stumps is the best place for training. The best one is recommended for ranging is this one:

Green Dragon Range Spot

Notice the spot where you are standing right now. This is the place where you will range dragons. This is the best dragon to range in the spot you are standing at right now is circled in orange in this picture:

Green Dragon Range Spot

Attack the dragon ***ONCE*** your character should move. Once he/she has launched his arrow run back to south-west of the stump again. Where you started. The dragon should come over and stop between you and the stump. This is it. Stay there and range it, you should have no problems. Once your dragon is slayed, run two spaces north where it's loot should be, grab all your arrows, dragonhide, dragon bones and the loot it dropped and go back to your space south-west of the stump. Keep repeating this until you want to go.

Blue Dragons

A Blue Dragon

Blue Dragons are the next in the chain. They are level 111, so I suggest being at least 75 combat with GOOD food before attempting to get at these guys. The best place to kill blue dragons is Taverley Dungeon. You need a Dusty Key (found in the dungeon, see Hero's Quest under Lava Eel for complete details) to get to the Dragons themselves. Once inside their lair, run past the group of Baby blue dragons to the circle-like area of eggs. There are some good maging/ranging spots in this area.

Map of the Blue Dragon Cave

Unfortunately, there are only a few Halberd-friendly spots here. The best place to range, mage or hally Blue dragons is in the Basement of the Hero's Guild. Have fun killing these Dragons and tele when your out of food or full. Also watch out for the Baby blue dragons, they are level 48 and incredibly annoying to the dragon killers there.

Red Dragons

A Red Dragon

Red dragons are found only in 2 places: High level Wilderness and the Karamja Dungeon. They are level 152, so BE PREPARED! Have a combat level of at least 80 and bring at least full swordfish for food, otherwise you'll be wasting your time. The best (and pretty much only way) to kill red dragons is melee, as both of their lairs lack good spots for Hallying, ranging or maging. The best place to kill them is in the Karamja Dragon Dungeon (southwest of Brimhaven), as the Wilderness is way too much of a risk. In the Karamja Dragon Dungeon, you must go through several tunnels and caverns. There are two ways into the Red Dragon area, by squeezing through a pipe or going over a log (30 agility required). Once inside, fight Reds to your heart's content, and watch out for the level 65 Baby red dragons.

Black Dragons

A Black Dragon

Black Dragons are the toughest of the normal dragons. They are a whopping level 227, so be at least level 90 before trying to take them out. Black Dragons can be found at the tunnel at the end of the Lava Maze in the Wilderness, but, like Red Dragons, it is nowhere near safe or profitable to kill them there. The best place is in Taverley Dungeon. You must go past the Blue Dragons, Black Demons, Poison Spiders and Monks of Zamorak to get to them. There is only one good Range or Mage spot here. It's close to the Obelisk, just stand 1 step from the passage. If you get it just right the dragon will be too big to attack you there.

Happy Dragon Hunting = )
