Cherished Memories
There is no question that the loss of life caused by the Leopoldville disaster was horrendous. The total number of dead and injured was the worst disaster to ever befall an American Infantry Division as the resilt of an enemy submarine attack. But, statsistics are cold and impersonal. Only when we view the faces of those who died and those who survived, when we read their personal letters, when we examine all of their cherished memories, preserved and treasured for over half-a-century, can we appreciate the magnitude of the tragedy. Many families have shared their most treasured items of memorabilia with me. Some items, I have already turned over to the National Infantry Museum at Ft. Benning, Georgia. Other items I use in my various lectures and exhibits regarding the catastrophe.
